Shear joints impose uniform stresses across the bond area which results in the highest possible joint strength. IS 15477:2019 & ASTM D1002 is commonly performed to measure the shear strength of adhesives that are used to bond metals.
Measuring the bond strength of adhesives is considered one of the essential metrics to characterize different formulations. A lap shear test is recognized as one of the methods to mimic real-life loading conditions. The test uses two samples, or specimens, which are bonded together before applying tensile force to pull until shear occurs.
